The tin route allows no shortcuts. Anyone who tries to buy equipment before closing the flowsheet, or sell solder before refining the metal, pays twice: on the wrong CAPEX and on the discounted sale price.

01 · Ore — cassiterite

Before any equipment: ore characterization. Grade, particle size, gangue mineralogy and the presence of tantalum, niobium, iron and sulfur define the entire downstream route.

What's usually missing: characterization assay and preliminary mass balance. Without it, plant sizing is guesswork.

Case 01 · Mining company, Central Africa

"I want to produce solder from my ore."

That route doesn't exist. Solder is an alloy formulated from refined tin — first the smelter delivers the metal, then refining guarantees the grade, only then the alloy. Skipping a step here means buying equipment that's useless.

OUTCOME

Redirected at the start of the investment. Today it follows the correct sequence, with the solder scope positioned at the right phase of the project.

Case 02 · Operating plant

"I want pure tin, but without the refining step."

Without refining there's no purity — there's crude tin, which the market buys at a discount. We calculated exactly what was missing and how much the discount cost per shipped tonne.

OUTCOME

The client chose to continue with crude. Their decision — but an informed one, with the cost of the discount on the table. That's consulting too.

Context

Mining company with smelting equipment already purchased and never used, sitting idle on site. Capital tied up, no production and no defined route for the metal.

Scope executed

Complete assembly of the tin smelter reusing existing equipment; assembly of the solder alloy production plant; design of a tantalum and niobium recovery route from the slag generated in the tin process.

Technical challenge

Fitting equipment specified by third parties into a flowsheet that closed the mass balance — instead of repurchasing the plant. And turning a liability (slag) into a stream with recoverable value.

Result

High-purity tin production (99.9%) and solder alloy line operating. Ta/Nb slag recovery route designed — new revenue from material that used to go to the tailings pile.

About

Marlon de Mendonça — non-ferrous metallurgy since 2003, engineering since 1998.

Graduated from the Pontifical Catholic University of Minas Gerais in 1998. Before graduating he was already working in steel and metallurgy, focused on refractory ceramics, research and development, quality, process standardization and training.

Since then dedicated to metallurgy, with an emphasis on non-ferrous metals from 2003 onward — tin, gold, lead, zinc, tantalum and niobium. Dynamic, committed and ethical: ensures the project moves forward with technical rigor and persistence, regardless of where it's executed.

While the world stopped for COVID-19, Titan Engenharia took off with bold projects in Africa. Founded in 2021, it now runs consulting, training and complete projects — from idea to operation, with CAPEX and OPEX on the table.
